Flea and Tick Protection for Dogs

Flea and tick season is just around the corner with summer coming on, and you need to make sure that your dog is well protected. Finding a flea or tick is not easy all the time, and many people do not know that their dog can also be affected by ticks and fleas indoors. Even if the dog does not go outside much, he or she needs to have preventative care year-round. Pest prevention for dogs comes in a few different forms. You do not want to wait until you are finding a flea or tick on your dog before applying for protection:

1. Simparica
Simparica flea tick control is a once a month pill that protects your dog from ticks and fleas. It is easy to give to dogs because it is a tasty tablet. It works for a full 35 days and kills ticks and fleas before they can lay eggs. This flea tick medication for dogs is a chewable tablet that kills adult fleas and prevents the infestation of ticks and fleas. Simparica flea tick control protects your dog against fleas, black-legged ticks, American Dog ticks, Gulf Coast ticks and brown dog ticks for dogs 6months of age and older. The dog must weigh at least 2.8 Pounds.

2. Flea and tick collars
Finding a flea or tick on your dog may be startling at first but there are quick and easy ways to get rid of those pesky harmful insects. The Seresto 8 Month Flea and Tick Collar comes in sizes from large dogs to puppies 7 weeks and older. The Seresto collar is veterinarian recommended and will start killing fleas and ticks within the first 24 hours. If you have a dog that loves the water, you do not have to worry about the collar getting wet. It is made with a water-resistant formula that can get wet as well as be in the hot summer sun. The Seresto collar works by rubbing on the dog’s skin. If your dog has long hair, you should trim the hair under the collar so it can get to the skin of the dog easier. Remember, when fitting your dog for a collar, you should be able to put two fingers under the collar to make sure the collar is not too tight.

3. Topical treatments
Another veterinarian recommended flea tick medication for dogs is a monthly topical medication. K9 Advantix is a waterproof treatment that you can apply once a month to your dog. It comes in sizes ranging from small dogs to extra large dogs. It starts working within 12 hours. It will kill all stages of ticks and fleas and will prevent reinfestation. The treatment should be applied to two or three different spots down the dogs back. Start at the shoulders and go down to the base of the tail. Make sure you keep the medication in spots where the dog cannot lick it, so the formula can be taken into the skin.

4. Chewable treatments
There are also daily chewable treatments for dogs that will paralyze and kill ticks and fleas within an hour. Some chewable tablets are only for dogs that have an infestation and are not for using long-term.
